Apesar dos fortes protestos, sobretudo na Europa mas também na América Latina, das escassas provas produzidas e da confissão do autor do roubo, que afirmou que os "assassinados" não estiveram envolvidos, a sua dupla condição de imigrantes e anarquistas e o medo das ideias socialistas e comunistas levaram à sua morte. 50 anos mais tarde, a 23 de Agosto de 1977, Michael Dukakis, Governador do Massachusetts, reabilitou-os simbolicamente.
